珍妮特在政府部門打拚了那麽多年，總算坐上了衛生部部長的位子為了慶祝晉升，她在家中設置了一場聚會，邀請好友們參加。瑪莎和金妮是相戀多年的同性情人，金妮通過試管嬰兒手術懷上了三胞胎，這讓她和戀人都感到異常興奮。聚會在尚且平和的氣氛中進行著，在這個節骨眼上，珍妮特的丈夫比爾忽然宣布，自己患上了不治之症，命不久矣。這一消息猶如一枚重磅炸彈讓眾人炸開了鍋，與此同時，每個人隱藏在內心的秘密亦因為這枚炸彈製造的衝擊而紛紛浮出水麵。
