和子（鄔君梅 飾）小時候每次生日，父親就會用毛筆蘸上紅顏料在她臉上寫字，這給和子留下極深刻的印象，她從此認定寫在身體上的書法才是唯一的書法。加上自幼接受文學熏陶，內心有著自己獨立的想法，卻迫於現實中父權的權威而無法盡情釋放自我。亦因為難以明白她對自我的追尋是寓於對 文學 的癡迷中，和子的第一段婚姻以失敗收場。其後她去了香港，在那裏她認識了出版商和他的同性戀情人謝朗（伊萬·麥克格雷格 Ewan McGregor 飾），謝朗鼓勵她在自己身上寫字，和子就此創作《枕草子》，每寫滿一遍為一卷，每寫完一卷，謝朗就去找出版商，把身上的字給出版商看。而後和子卻因受不了謝朗冷落對他避而不見，謝朗為奪回和子，決定以死相逼。
