本片改編於美國插畫作家莫裏斯•桑達克1963年出版的同名兒童畫書。小男孩馬克斯精力旺盛無處發泄，不滿姐姐克萊爾的忽視和媽媽的管教。在一次與媽媽的爭吵中，馬克斯離家狂奔而去，到河邊獨自駕駛小船，在海麵航行了兩天兩夜，到達了一個神秘島嶼。島上生活著一群頭上長角、身材高大的毛絨絨怪物們，它們有的脾氣暴躁，有的性情溫順，還有的膽小怕事。為了不被吃掉，馬克斯騙怪物們說自己是維京人的國王，來到島上也要當它們的國王。單純的怪物們相信了馬克斯，興高采烈的奉他為王，在島上建築新居。但令馬克斯意外的，卻是名叫卡羅的怪獸與怪獸KW之間的矛盾……
