歐戰尾聲，盟軍上下逐漸彌漫著樂觀的情緒。為了提前結束戰爭，各地盟軍將領認為隻要一番猛攻，便可提早直搗柏林結束戰爭。於是輕率地將大批傘兵空投在德軍營地背後，去攻占阿納姆的那座橫跨萊茵河的大橋。不料遭遇德軍的頑強抵抗，盟軍付出了傷亡慘重的代價。這場堪稱二戰中最具戲劇性的戰役，終以盟軍的慘痛失敗而告終。
