二柱（廖京生 飾）的家境十分貧寒，還要照顧和他並沒有血緣關係的生病的養母。善良的二柱曾經救過巧哥兒（傅麗莉 飾）的父親，令巧哥兒喜歡上了他。為了撮合這兩人，鄉親們從家裏搬來了各種家具，把二柱原本家徒四壁的家打扮的漂漂亮亮。
二柱的母親得知巧哥兒想要嫁進一個富裕的家庭中，為了不拖累兒子，她想到了自殺，所幸被二柱及時製止了，二柱為了保護母親，寧願退婚。聰慧勤勞的巧哥兒幫助二柱種樹、幹農活，在她的操持之下，二柱家漸漸富了起來。就在一切都在好轉的節骨眼上，村裏的大款孫興光（李寶安 飾）看上了巧哥兒。
